Aim of the Module: To teach students how fabric can be manipulated and coming up with new textures and embellishment on the garment to make it more beautiful and attractive.
Topics to be covered
WEEK 1- INTRODUCTION TO FABRICS & TEXTILES
- Introduction to fabrics and textiles.
- Natural fibres and the designer
- Artificial fibres and their uses
- Woven, Knitted and Printed fabrics...How to differentiate them.
- Fibre identification methods 1
- Discussion: The fabric industry in Nigeria, Africa and diaspora. How it affects your work as a designer.
PRACTICAL CLASS: using yarns for decorative stitches in textile design. - blanket stitch, outline, chain, French knots, herring bone, hem stitch, cross stitch, back stitches etc.
WEEK 2 - NATURAL Versus ARTIFICIAL FIBERS
- Fibre identification methods 2
- Selecting fabrics for different collection
- Identification of fibres using the burn test
PRACTICAL CLASS: Discussion on the preparation of ACTIVITY #1: Swatch Book. (If time allows, students may work on this at the end of the class time.
- Students will cut out different types of fabrics and will be introduced to the burn test.
- Hand embroidery using decorative stitches combined with working with sequence, stones and beads.
WEEK 3 - FABRIC CONSTRUCTION (Woven, Non-woven & Knitted Fabrics)
PRACTICAL CLASS: weaving with cardboard strips to create bags, purses, throw pillows etc.
WEEK 4- INTRODUCTION TO TEXTILE DESIGN
(TERMS & METHODS)
- Introduction to the principles and elements of design
- Colour schemes and combos
PRACTICAL CLASS: Introduction to Fabric painting
WEEK 5 - INTRODUCTION TO T SHIRT DESIGN AND PRINTING TECHNOLOGY.
PRACTICAL CLASS:
- Use of Applique for T shirt design
- Use of the Stencilling method.
WEEK 6 - INTRODUCTION TO BASIC TIE & DYE TECHNIQUES.
PRACTICAL CLASS: Creating outstanding fabrics using the tie and dye technique.
